Book Signing @ Book Revue!

PAUL GRIFFIN
Tuesday, December 6th, 7pm @ Book Revue in Huntington.

Author, PAUL GRIFFIN, will speak about and sign his new book, "Stay With Me".

An urban romance that will capture your soul, break your heart, and restore your faith in the human spirit Fifteen-year-olds Cece and Mack didn't expect to fall in love. She's a sensitive A student; he's a high school dropout. But soon they're spending every moment together, bonding over a rescued dog, telling their secrets, making plans for the future. Everything is perfect. Until. "Until." Mack makes a horrible mistake, and in just a few minutes, the future they'd planned becomes impossible. In this stark new reality, both of them must find meaning and hope in the memories of what they had, to survive when the person they love can't stay. From award-winning writer Paul Griffin, "Stay with Me" is both heartbreaking and uplifting, filled with characters (both dog and human) that will forever change the way you look at the world.

Paul began writing his first novel as he finished college, in 1988. That novel and many others went unpublished. Meanwhile, he worked on the truck docks and in construction, as a dog trainer and a driver, teacher, tutor, EMT, butler, bartender, waiter, cook and dishwasher (alongside Vin Diesel). The hardest and best work was the teaching. Paul started working with at-risk, incarcerated and special needs teens in 1989, with a concentration in conflict resolution workshops aimed at stemming the spread of violence, substance abuse and HIV/AIDS among young adults. These days his workshops focus on helping young men and women tell their life stories as they reach out to counselors, judges, admissions officers and potential employers. Twenty years to the day after Paul graduated Dartmouth, Penguin/Dial released his “first” (twenty-fourth) novel Ten Mile River and then The Orange Houses a year later. Dial is publishing a third novel, Stay With Me, in the fall of 2011, a fourth, Burning Blue, a mystery, in 2012 and a fifth, tentatively a sci-fi romance, in 2013. Paul lives in Washington Heights, NYC with three dogs and one wife, documentary moviemaker Risa Morimoto.

New Non-fiction Audiobook arrivals!

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Two bestselling authors first met in a televised Caltech debate on “the future of God,” one an articulate advocate for spirituality, the other a prominent physicist. Book Signing @ Book Revue.

>TONY IOMMI

Wednesday, November 2nd, 7pm @ Book Revue; Huntington.

Lead guitarist of Black Sabbath, TONY IOMMI, will sign his new memoir Iron Man.

Tony Iommi—the only original member of Black Sabbath who stayed with the group from its inception—would become to be known as the father of heavy metal. In his memoir, Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath, he tells how, when he was a teenager, the ends of the two middle fingers on his right hand were sliced off by a piece of machinery. Doctors were able to take skin from one of his arms and graft it to his fingertips, but Iommi would never play the guitar normally again. He had to learn how to compensate for his disability by making the music sound “fuller.” Today, he’s credited for inspiring and producing the deeper, more powerful musical tones for which Black Sabbath became famous.

In 2000—thirty years after it was first released—Black Sabbath won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for their song “Iron Man.” They even performed at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. But their success wasn’t immediate or without hardship. From drug and alcohol abuse, to marital discord, to being called “Satanists,” to constant management problems and exits by band members—most notably Ozzy Osbourne—the musicians of Black Sabbath didn’t have an easy time of it. In Iron Man, Iommi gives us a glimpse of what he experienced as a member of this legendary group, taking us through some of the band’s most bizarre moments onstage and backstage, and bringing us from the recording studios to the (trashed) hotel rooms. Throughout, we see the camaraderie within the band, as well as the struggles each member went through on their way to the top of the charts.

Tony Iommi is a cofounding member and lead guitarist of Black Sabbath and is among the most influential guitarists of all time. Born in 1948, he lives in Birmingham, England.

Booklist's Top Ten First Novels

The Arriviste. By James Wallenstein.
Energetic and naive Bud Younger moves in next door to silver-haired venture capitalist Neil Fox and wheedles his way into a treacherous deal in Wallenstein’s riptide debut about emotional bankruptcy and betrayal.

The Art of Fielding. By Chad Harbach.
Henry Skrimshander, a shortstop of phenomenal ability, is at the center of first-novelist Harbach’s psychologically astute baseball saga set at a small liberal-arts school in Wisconsin.

The Borrower. By Rebecca Makkai.
In Makkai’s picaresque first novel, Lucy, a 26-year-old children’s librarian, “borrows” her favorite patron, bright, book-loving 10-year-old Ian, after his fundamentalist parents enroll him in a program meant to “cure” his nascent homosexuality.

The Family Fang. By Kevin Wilson.
First-time novelist Wilson mixes dire humor and melancholy in this satirical portrait of the uniquely dysfunctional Fangs––husband-and-wife performance artists Caleb and Camille and their children, Annie and Buster—and offers a scathing critique of how the baby-boom generation maltreated Gen X.

The Language of Flowers. By Vanessa Diffenbaugh.
In Diffenbaugh’s enchanting and ennobling debut, Victoria, an abused ward of the California foster-care system, finds her way to a fulfilling life after working with a florist and learning about the hidden meaning of flowers.

The Submission. By Amy Waldman.
Waldman’s magnetizing first novel brilliantly dramatizes the painful legacy of 9/11 as a disparate group—including two very different 9/11 widows; the brother of a lost firefighter; a journalist; and an architect, the son of Muslim immigrants—confronts the life-and-death moral quandaries associated with choosing the design for a ground zero memorial.

Swamplandia! By Karen Russell.
In Russell’s mythic, lavishly imagined first novel, a shabby tourist attraction deep in the haunted Everglades morphs into a spectacularly strange realm of archetypal mystery and danger as young Ava searches for her missing sister.

The Taker. By Alma Katsu.
Katsu’s mesmerizing, original debut arcs between a Puritan community and a present-day young woman found in the Maine woods who claims that she has killed a man and that she’s immortal.

When God Was a Rabbit. By Sarah Winman.
English actress Winman has written a wonderfully wise and darkly humorous tale of young Elly and her older brother, Joe; and of love and friendship, family uncircumscribed by biological bonds, and loss worse than death.

The World Beneath. By Cate Kennedy.
In her gripping debut novel, Kennedy scathingly portrays Rich and Sandy, a long-divorced couple who have accomplished little, and turns the wilderness into another vividly rendered character when Rich takes their sullen teenage daughter hiking in Tasmania.

True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than "the boss" people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in people and inspire them. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right. And if you have the skill and dedication, you can reach the pinnacle of leadership-where experience will allow you to extend your influence beyond your immediate reach and time for the benefit of others. The 5 Levels of Leadership are: Position - Permission - Production - People Development - Pinnacle. Through humor, in-depth insight, and examples, internationally recognized leadership expert John C. Maxwell describes each of these stages of leadership. He shows you how to master each level and rise up to the next to become a more influential, respected, and successful leader.

Moore is his own meta-Forrest Gump, as one moment he's an 11-year old boy stuck on a Senate elevator with Bobby Kennedy and the next moment he's inside the Bitburg cemetery with a dazed and confused Ronald Reagan. Changing planes in Vienna, he escapes death at the hands of the terrorist Abu Nidal. All of this is the stuff that makes for great fiction, but every one of these stories is true and from the life of one Michael Moore.

Dale Carnegie’s principles have endured for nearly a century. Since its original publication in 1936, his timeless classic How to Win Friends and Influence People has gone on to sell 15 million copies. Now, introducing new listeners to Carnegie’s words of wisdom, comes How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age, a new guide for a new era.
Dale Carnegie could never have predicted the trajectory that new media would take, and the ways that the simple television screen would be adapted into computers and handheld communication devices. He didn’t know the term “social media” and Facebook was something not even dreamed of in Buck Rogers cartoons. And yet his lessons remain relevant for everyone who communicates online today. In fact, with problems such as cyber bullying and email etiquette, we need Carnegie’s help more than ever. Dale Carnegie and Associates, Inc. has re-imagined Carnegie’s lasting lessons for this difficult digital age, reframing Carnegie’s insights about communication, self-expression, and leadership. This book is a must-have guide for anyone who wants to find success on Facebook, Linked-In, Twitter, and any social media format today and in the future.

In the summer of 1944, Denis Avey was being held in a British POW labour camp, E715, near Auschwitz III. He had heard of the brutality meted out to the prisoners there and he was determined to witness what he could. He hatched a plan to swap places with a Jewish inmate and smuggled himself into his sector of the camp. He spent the night there on two occasions and experienced at first-hand the cruelty of a place where slave workers, had been sentenced to death through labor. Astonishingly, he survived to witness the aftermath of the Death March where thousands of prisoners were murdered by the Nazis as the Soviet Army advanced. After his own long trek right across central Europe he was repatriated to Britain. For decades he couldn't bring himself to revisit the past that haunted his dreams, but now Denis Avey feels able to tell the full story—a tale as gripping as it is moving—which offers us a unique insight into the mind of an ordinary man whose moral and physical courage are almost beyond belief.

A bestselling, groundbreaking author investigates successful long term marriages, interviewing wives and their uncensored strategies for staying married. In raw, candid, titillating stories, Krasnow's cast of wise women give voice to the truth about marriage and the importance of maintaining a strong sense of self apart from the relationship. Some spend summers separately from their partners. Some make time for wine with the girls. One septuagenarian has a recurring date with an old flame from high school. In every case, the marriage operates on many tracks, giving both spouses license to pursue the question "Who am I apart from my marriage?" Krasnow's goal is to give women permission to create their own marriages at any age. Marital bliss is possible, she says, if each partner is blissful apart from the other.

The stand-up comedian, television host, best-selling author and actress candidly discusses her personal life, her professional career and describes what it was like to become a judge on American Idol.
