Jeffrey Tambor gave libraries a huge shout-out in his recent NYT By the Book interview...

Golden Globe Awards wave waving golden globes jeffrey tambor GIF

Here's part of the Q&A:

"Q: What kind of reader were you as a child?

A: There was a library near us in San Francisco. It was the West Portal Public Library. I would ask my father to drive me there at night and pick me up when it closed. I think he was worried about this routine but never let on. Also, I kept this a secret from my friends, as I don’t think it would have been considered the “coolest” habit. It was the ’50s, and the card catalog and the Dewey Decimal System were in fashion. I hung out in the 812 section — American theater and plays. This is where I first read Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” and was transfixed. I remember staring into space for what seemed an eternity after reading Linda Loman’s final speech. I’ve been a fan of libraries ever since and all but wept when my kids got their first cards. No, I wept! I always got that same feeling of “expectancy” when entering the library — it’s the same feeling when the lights are turned down in the theater and that hush goes through the audience. It is sacred."

We love you Jeffrey Tambor!

Artemis is coming...

 moon goddess artemis GIF

He's BACK!  The Martian author Andy Weir will hit the bestseller lists in November 2017 with his second book
entitled, "Artemis", a crime novel set on the moon.

It's already been picked up by 20th Century Fox and it seems The Martian producers will team up once again for "Artemis". But in Hollywood anything can happen, so we'll see if that remains the case.

EarlyWord has a great clip of the author discussing his new book and you can watch that right here.

Who is Artemis?

Greek Goddess of the Hunt, Forests and Hills, the Moon, Archery. Artemis is known as the goddess of the hunt and is one of the most respected of all the ancient Greek deities. ... She was the daughter of Zeus, king of the gods, and the Titaness Leto and she has a twin brother, the god Apollo. Her Roman equivalent is Diana.

Congratulations to Director Ellen Firer! Her book review has been featured on the June 2017 Library Reads list!

 celebration GIF

The book is "The Alice Network" by Kate Quinn.
Click this link to place your hold.
Here's Ellen's terrific review:
"Outstanding fictional account of the Alice network, women spies in World War I, tough and determined to defeat the Germans. The story centers on Eve Gardiner, aka Marguerite, a young woman trained to spy on the Germans, and Charlie St. Clair, a young woman post WWII, pregnant, lost and finding her direction. The two meet and the story alternates chapters as Charlie is determined to find her cousin, Rose presumed dead after the war, while Eve’s story of the Alice network unfolds. A fantastic book with strong female characters.” - Ellen Firer, Director, Merrick Library

Congratulations, Ellen!

My mother's favorite books...

mtv gif mom mothers day mother's day GIF
My mom was a voracious reader.
She could read a book in one sitting.
And her favorite writer?
Stephen King.
I think my mom may have been the original fan girl,
not an Annie Wilks obviously, but a pretty big fan.
One summer we both read "The Mist" while vacationing in Maine,
the two of us peering across the lake in terror.

Here are some of her favorites in no particular order
This one's for you Mom. xo
