Celeste Ng: By the Book
Author of "Everything I Never Told You" and the newest, "Little Fires Everywhere" shares her favorites with us in the By the Book column feature in the Sunday, NYT.
A small piece of the interview is below.
NYT: Which classic novel did you recently read for the first time?
“The Age of Innocence,” by Edith Wharton. I’d read “Ethan Frome” in high school, but somehow missed this one. It’s a masterpiece. Despite being almost a hundred years old, it still speaks powerfully on the assumptions we make about each other, and our human failures to communicate our needs and desires.

Happy reading!

September is Library Card Sign-Up month!
How do you do it? See below!
Getting a Library Card
You may get a card if you live in the Merrick Union Free School District (MUFSD).
Apply in person at the library. Bring two forms of identification, unless you have a current driver's license. Acceptable identification is defined as follows:
- A valid driver's license or other identification with a photo.
- A utility bill, credit card bill, current car registration, insurance card, property tax bill, mortgage statement, bank statement, typed lease, landlord's notarized letter, or school identification.
All of the above must have your current Merrick address. A P.O BOX IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Non-residents who own property in the Merrick School District also may have a library card if they show current identification and a tax bill for the property they own. This library card will be valid for one year.
Patrons whose cards are issued for one year will be asked to verify their qualifying information annually. All other cardholders are required to verify their residency every three years by presenting one form of identification.
Lost cards will be replaced at a $1 fee. Cards that are no longer usable due to wear and tear will be replaced at no charge.
Children's Library Cards
All children from birth-sixth grade are eligible for a Merrick Library card. Children’s cards are issued at the Children’s Room desk. If a child is getting a card for the first time, and is in seventh grade she/ he is entitled to an adult card.
A parent must be present and must show proof of residency in the Merrick School district. This can be their own library card if it is in good standing or a driver’s license. Otherwise, (2) proofs with their address are required. Parent must sign the application, accepting responsibility for all materials borrowed on their child’s card. The child’s name appears in red on the card. Upon entering seventh grade, the name is rewritten in black ink and status is changed in the computer. Children who attend a school in Merrick but live in another community must obtain a card from their home library. Nassau library cards can be used in any Nassau library.
