You all know how I feel about getting out of your comfort genre
(try it, you'll like it).
And you all know I'm a big proponent of sci-fi and horror.
I've recommended The Martian, The Bird Box,
The Leftovers (ages ago).

All are crossover tales that have been
optioned for movies (or mini-series).
This has been out since the spring, but the buzz is getting crazy:
TRUST ME.
This is a non-traditional science fiction series.
Completely approachable
and totally worth your time.
I know, I know.
You don't want to commit to three books,
but the beauty is that they're all available now,
so you won't have to wait a year (or two)
for the next installment.
AND they're not too lengthy
(regardless it's worth the trip).
